Any occasion? Are you sure?

One of the biggest pet-peeves I have is when a DJ or entertainment company's slogan or claim is "Music For Any Occasion". Really? Let's take a closer look at this statement and explain why I believe it is not only false, but impossible.

Guilty as charged. One of our first business cards, circa 1991.

First, assuming this DJ or entertainment company is any good or shall we say "talented", would this DJ be able to perform during a tax audit? How bout playing the right tune while getting a root canal? Is there a perfect song for the moment when you find out your kid is dropping out of high school?

In this case were taking the word "occasion" as a literal term and just poking fun at it. But seriously, there are some DJ's who would admit to questioning the reason why there were hired at a particular event. Whether it was inexperience or unfamiliarity of the situation, they lack the necessary background knowledge to perform and satisfy the customer. Not every DJ is right for a particular event. A more appropriate slogan should be "Music for your special occasion". Emphasis on "your', because after all, it is the clients occasion or event.

Secondly, is music all you offer? Not every event requires music being blasted through amplified speakers. What about fun, amusing, energetic, adaptive and most of all entertaining. It is important that the DJ be aware of the guests and clients tastes in music and be able to sprinkle music selections that will create a festive atmosphere.

Clearly the slogan should read something like this: "Entertainment for your special occasion". There, that's sounds a lot better. However, I decided to create a slogan that will not only imply philosophy of what we do, but, what our purpose should be in life. Hence "celebrate life" was created.
